The history of Bar Harbor and MDI is beautifully exhibited at this 1902 waterside mansion listed on the National Register of Historic Places. See and hear about the area’s discovery and settlement, the Town of Bar Harbor, the wealthy and famous who summered here, the creation of Acadia National Park, the Great Fire of ‘47, and much more!
The Museum is open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and selected holidays. We follow State of Maine and CDC protocols to ensure a safe and healthy museum experience for our guests, volunteers, and staff. The guidelines may be read in full on our website.
During Made Maine It week, we are offering museum guests that purchase two entry tickets or more a free DVD copy of either the Fire of ‘47 or Consolidation movies. Both documentary films were produced by the BHHS and shot and edited on MDI ($20 value). Enjoy paddling Castine’s historic coastline as you observe Castine’s hillside village from a kayaker’s perspective. We'll meander through classic wooden sailboats moored in the harbor and paddle amongst the coastal islands of Castine Bay. Tuesday Tide Tour. Paddle sea kayaks with a naturalist on a natural history tour of Mount Desert Narrows. Learn about Harbor Seals and Harbor Porpoise, Bald Eagles, and barnacles. Observe the lunar pull as tides ebb and flow. Our wide-ranging tour narrative includes discussion of local aquaculture, geology, and human history. This three-hour adventure will be limited to six people. Paddlers of all ages welcome. $75 each.

5 unique walking tours showcasing the history of Bar Harbor are given daily by Red Cloak Tours. Explore Bar Harbor’s past with an experienced storyteller that will personalize your private tour.
Haunted History, Maritime History & Mystery, Secrets of Bar Harbor, the Village Burying Ground and Historic Bar Harbor are the available guided walks, which last about 45 minutes each.
Each tour is only $19.99 for each individual group with up to 10 guests. The walks are done by phone via conference call, with your professional storyteller LIVE on the phone so you will be guided from spot to spot, told the history, folklore, etc, and be able to ask questions or pause for a break if necessary.
