In Diane Magras’s middle grade book “The Mad Wolf’s Daughter” Drest’s sheltered life on a remote Scottish headland is shattered when invading knights capture her family, but leave Drest behind. So she starts off on a wild rescue attempt, taking a wounded invader along as a hostage. Join Magras for an author talk and book signing at the Jesup Memorial Library on Saturday, September 22 at 10:30 a.m.
“The Mad Wolf’s Daughter” was inspired not just by Scotland, but also by Magras’s youth spent on Mount Desert Island and in Acadia National Park. She will read from her book and talk about her inspiration as well as the medieval castles that are featured in the book. After the talk, kids will learn how to make their own castle based on the one in the book.
The New York Times named “The Mad Wolf’s Daughter” an editor’s choice writing, “Drest is a ferocious heroine…it’s clear we’re in the hands of a master storyteller….’The Mad Wolf’s Daughter’ feels like an instant classic.” And, a Publisher’s Weekly starred review stated, “Empathetic, bold, and entirely herself at a time when women were dismissed as weak, Drest shines in this fast-paced adventure.”
Magras grew up on Mount Desert Island in Maine surrounded by woods, cliffs, and the sea. She lives in Maine with her husband and son and thinks often of Scotland, where her books are set. Her next book, “The Hunt for the Mad Wolf’s Daughter,” will be published next year.
This talk is for children ages eight and up and is open to adults as well. Books will be on sale that morning courtesy of co-sponsor Sherman’s Books.
