                        Description

Join author Ben Emory at the Jesup Memorial Library on Thursday, June 14 at 7 p.m. for an author talk and book signing for his new book “Sailor for the Wild: On Maine, Conservation and Boats.” Emory recounts a lifetime of intertwined adventures on the water, as well as his background in professional and volunteer land conservation. Shining through is the joy of Maine’s ocean and landscape, fascination with good boats, dedication to conservation, and observations about a changing world.

In his book, Emory recounts the early history of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) as well as how it has evolved into the organization it is today. Emory was one of the original staff members of MCHT and served as the organizations third executive director. Emory also talks about Acadia National Park and his connections to it, including his time on the Acadia National Park Advisory Commission. This partnership between Acadia and MCHT promoted conservation easements as a tool for preserving the scenic and natural qualities of islands near MDI which became the basis nationally heralded conservation easement program. Emory was a founding board member of the Land Trust Exchange (now Land Trust Alliance), which was headquartered on MDI when it first began. Emory also recounts his time spent on the water on and in around MDI.

Tim Glidden, President of Maine Coast Heritage Trust, writes that “Sailor for the Wild” is a “great history and warmly written! . . . from a player present at the birth of the modem conservation movement.” And Anthony Irving, Preservation Chair of the Lyme (CT) Land Conservation Trust and ocean sailor, adds “as one of Maine's pioneers for the land trust movement, Ben Emory's historical perspective in ‘Sailor for the Wild’ is both enlightening and.”

Books will be on sale that night courtesy of co-sponsor Sherman’s Books and the talk is co-sponsored by Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. For more information on the talk contact the Jesup at 207-288-4245 or mrice@jesuplibrary.org.
