A Taste of Fall in Bar Harbor: Hoppy Brews, Small Plates & More

Ah, fall. A bittersweet time – indicative of the end of summer, but offering its own unique beauty and delight in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Part of what makes fall, fall are those iconic tastes we associate with the season – the sweetness of nutmeg and pumpkin, the tang of apple, the spice of cinnamon, buttery sauces and warming broths. Hungry yet? Savor these fall favorites in Bar Harbor.

    Coffee & Warm Beverages

Everyone knows that the perfect fall morning starts off with crunchy leaves and coffee (or other beverage of choice!). At Acadia Perk Coffee, find fall specialties like pumpkin spice lattes, maple chai lattes, Caramel Apple Sippers and their Autumn Macchiato. Coffee Hound also delivers with a variety of small-batch coffees local to Maine. At Choco-Latte, you can pair your fall-inspired cup with a house-made bagel, sandwich, baked good or chocolate.

    Delightful Donuts

OK, you have the coffee down, but what about donuts? Head to Graffiti Donuts to pick up a perfect fall complement to your beverage (or surprise everyone on your trip with a warm box) – from cinnamon sugar and pumpkin spice to maple bacon, you’re sure to find a donut that is creatively delectable.

    Savory, Warm Meals

Have you tried CIAO Bar Harbor yet? If not, it’s time to go. This cozy, family-owned restaurant offers a variety of small plates, along with an impressive drink menu and array of desserts. CIAO's prosciutto crostini (pictured) looks like autumn on a plate: tomato confit, whipped goat cheese and crispy prosciutto.

For a classic Maine meal, bite into lobster mac and cheese from Dog & Pony Tavern (served with fresh parmesan and a hunk of garlic bread, of course). Savor Stewman’s rustic clam chowder or lobster bisque, simmered to perfection with local ingredients and cream. Tried raw oysters served on ice? Swap them for hot, succulent oysters in the fall. These can be found at Fish House Grill through October.

    Beer, Wine and Cocktails

Beer enthusiasts will enjoy a variety of craft brews from local breweries. Atlantic Brewing Company has been brewing their Leaf-Peeping Ale since 2009, an English-style red ale (the color is inspired by the surrounding foliage), flavored with German noble hops to create a smooth flavor. Fogtown Brewing features up to 18 tap lines pouring Fogtown craft brews, hard seltzers, ciders, and wine (on draft and cans-to-go).

A glass of red wine or silky chardonnay on a cool day will warm you right up. Pick up a bottle from House Wine Shop – their six for $60 deal is a great way to stock up for gatherings. Bar Harbor Cellars is open through late October, and offers wine tastings at their scenic farm location.

Ready for fall cocktail hour? Side Street Café's “Margarita of the Moment” this fall will be their apple cider margarita, complete with a sugary rim.
