Visitor Services Associate

The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce is seeking an individual to join our team as one of our Visitor Services Associates. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce represents members from nearly 400 independent businesses and helps thousands yearly as part of its services. Services include assisting more than 100,000 visitors annually at its Visitor Information Center and Information Kiosk, producing and distributing 100,000 planning guidebooks annually through trade shows, mailings, and information centers, and executing events such as Bar Harbor’s July 4th Celebration, Early Bird Pajama Sales & Bed Races, and member networking events.
As a Visitor Services Associate, you are the official “Welcome Committee” for Bar Harbor. You will be one of the first points of contact for thousands of visitors, providing the expert local knowledge that turns a good vacation into a great one. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Guest Relations & Concierge Services
- Expert Guidance: Provide accurate, up-to-date information on Acadia National Park trails, dining options, lodging, and local attractions.
- Problem Solving: Assist visitors with logistics, such as navigating the Island Explorer shuttle, parking tips, and event schedules.
- Ambassador: Represent the Chamber’s 400+ members by actively recommending local businesses and services.
2. Retail & Administrative Support
- Sales: Process sales for Acadia National Park passes using a simple POS system.
- Resource Management: Ensure brochures, guides, and maps are neatly stocked and that the Visitor Center remains clean and inviting.
- Information Accuracy: Answer phone calls and respond to general email inquiries with professionalism and a "can-do" attitude.
- Flexibility: Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall mission and operational goals of the Chamber.
3. Data Collection
- Assist in tracking visitor statistics (e.g., where guests are visiting from) to help the Chamber improve future marketing efforts.
Qualifications:
- Local Enthusiast: A strong working knowledge of Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, and Acadia National Park (or a high willingness to learn!).
- Communication: Excellent verbal communication skills and a friendly, outgoing personality.
- Reliability: Punctuality is key, especially during the busy summer months when our visitors need us most.
- Tech Basics: Comfort using a tablet or computer for basic sales and looking up information.
Physical Needs:
- Ability to remain in a stationary position or move about the Visitor Center for shifts of 4–8 hours.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs (e.g., a box of 50 Bar Harbor Guidebooks).
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays

Compensation & Benefits:
This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position with hourly wages at $16 per hour. The position is available seasonally from June 1st to October 30th. The position requires an estimated 16 to 24-hour work schedule per week. This position does not include employee housing.
Location:
The position will be primarily based in downtown Bar Harbor.
