Jazz Concert with Ed Liu and Basile Tarchini
Drs. Edison Liu and Basile Tarchini are scientists with a passion for music. Join them on Sunday, March 24 at 2 p.m. for a concert of gentle jazz. The duo (Liu, on the piano, and Tarchini, on the double bass) will perform a mix of jazz standards, contemporary pieces and original compositions.
Dr. Liu is the President and CEO of The Jackson Laboratory (JAX), a non-profit research institution with a 90-year history on MDI. He is a physician scientist who has made discoveries in the genomic causes of breast cancer. Dr. Liu started classical piano at the age of seven and migrated to jazz when he was 13 all in the music rich city of San Francisco. He performed in jazz combos and big bands and arranged and conducted musicals at the University before embarking on a career in medicine and science.
Dr. Tarchini, an Assistant Professor at JAX, is an expert on how the inner ear develops to allow hearing. He started playing classical clarinet in Switzerland where he grew up, but took up double bass during his doctoral studies in biology. Without formal training, he learned by listening to albums and practicing with fellow musicians in the active jazz scene in Geneva.
This concert is free and open to the public, though donations are gratefully accepted. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Jesup at or email@example.com.
