                        Description

The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT) spans from Canada to Mexico and crosses five states the rail loops through 25 National Forests, 21 Wilderness Areas, three National Parks, one National Monument and eight Bureau of Land Management Resource Areas. After completing thru-hikes of both the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails, then 63-year-old Tom Jamrog decides to invite three other men for an intergenerational thru-hike of a lifetime along the CDT. He now recounts this hike in his book “In the Path of Young Bulls: An Odyssey on America's Continental Divide Trail.” Join Jamrog at the Jesup Memorial Library on Thursday, July 12 at 7 p.m. for an author talk and book signing.

Jamrog first thru-hiked the AT at the age of 57 in 2007 and at 60 in 2010 he thru-hiked the PCT. Three years later, he embarked on the last hike in the “Triple Crown” of long distance hiking, the CDT. “In the Path of Young Bulls” details his five-month-long, 2,500 journey on the CDT. The book also serves as a resource for hikers in planning their own CDT adventures, by including daily mileages from starting and ending locations, as well as on-trail reports and conditions for each day’s hike.
Carey Michael Kish, two-time AT thru-hiker and author of “AMC’s Best Day Hikes Along the Maine Coast” writes “At a time in life when most men are happily easing into retirement, Tom Jamrog took up long-distance hiking, tackling the grueling miles of the AT and PCT. Satisfied but by no means sated, 63-year old Jamrog then sought the ultimate prize, the continent-sized challenge of the CDT. ‘In the Path of Young Bulls’ is the story of that desolate, brutal, expansive, majestic 2,500-mile journey, a monumental effort achieved in the company of hiking partners half his age. With palpable determination and commitment, Jamrog vividly and honestly captures the real highs and lows of thru-hiking the Rockies from Mexico to Canada, a rare human feat that earned him the coveted Triple Crown of Hiking.”

Jamrog, a registered Maine Guide and past president of the Maine Association of School Psychology, has been backpacking and exploring the outdoors for 50 years. He penned a popular column in Motorcycle Tour & Travel, and twice completed 24-hour, 1,000-mile Iron Butt motorcycle rides. He earned the Triple Crown award from the American Long Distance Hiking Association in 2014.

Books will be on sale that night courtesy of co-sponsor Sherman’s Books and the talk is co-sponsored by Bar Harbor Bank & Trust.
