Celebrate National Poetry Month with a group of talented students from the Conners Emerson School as they share their poetry they have working on at a special event at the Jesup Memorial Library on Thursday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m.
The students spent the past few months studying poetry and improvisation with Nicole Cardano. Together, they have focused on how sound and movement through the practice of improvisational theater can inspire the written word. Cardano has taught the students how improvisational techniques like “Yes And” can inspire them to embrace their own ideas.
Cardano is the founder and executive director of Theater Today, a nonprofit, committed to the practice of theater as a social, emotional and education tool. Also, Cardano is the Arts Outreach Educator with The Grand Theater in Ellsworth, as well as a Teaching Artist Leader with the Maine Arts Commission. She works with theater integration in the classroom in connection to curriculum studies and improving social skills amongst peers.
The Write Stuff is a collaborative program between Conners Emerson School, MDI High School, and the Jesup Memorial Library. The program is designed to help kids become storytellers in three different ways, orally, in writing and through poetry. The Write Stuff is funded by a grant from the Maine State Library with support from Machias Savings Bank. For more information, contact program director Melinda Rice-Schoon at 207-288-4245 or mrice@jesuplibrary.org.
