Last spring, Caroline Musson, Logan Wilbur, Charlotte Partin, and Ella Izenour, students from Pemetic, did research on about the effects of plastic waste on the environment and our health. Now, they are working with all four communities on Mount Desert Island to reduce the use of the single use plastic bags as well as polystyrene (styrophone) Join these students at the Jesup Memorial Library on Tuesday, October 16 at 5:30 p.m. as they give their presentation about plastic use. After their talk there will be a screening of part of the documentary “A Plastic Ocean.”
After doing their research Musson, Wilbur, Partin and Izenour decided to present their findings to the Southwest Harbor select board and ask for the elimination of single use plastic bags. Their presentation was so compelling that the board asked them to write an ordinance that would make their vision a reality. The students were subsequently asked to present to town governments in Bar Harbor, Mount Desert and Tremont, and now they are working with others to eliminate single use plastic bags and polystyrene in all four towns.
