Certified Nurse Midwife Linda Robinson spent two years living and working in Malawi, Africa teaching midwifery at Kamuzu College of Nursing. Join her on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Jesup Memorial Library as she talks about her time working to implement a model maternity ward at the college.
In Malawi, the chance that a woman will die in childbirth during her lifetime is 1 in 29, and there is a growing fear around health facilities because of abusive and disrespectful maternity care. Robinson worked with the Global Health Service Partnership to combat these problems by planning and implementing a model maternity ward to improve the student midwife experience, empower midwives to function as independent practitioners, promote respectful care of women and improve overall maternal/infant outcomes. Robinson also will talk about her work to help empower women in the country through teaching them jewelry-making and simple business skills.
For more information on the talk, contact the Jesup at 207-288-4245 or mrice@jesuplibrary.org.
