Learn more about the animals and plants that dot the Maine coast with authors Ruth Fortner Grierson and Thomas F. Vining at the Jesup Memorial Library on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Grierson and Vining are the co-authors of “Living on the Edge: A Guide to Tide Pool Animals, Seaweeds, and Seaside Plants”
“Living on the Edge” features the habitats found along the coast including sand and cobble beaches, salt marshes, as well as the water itself, as well as the common organisms found there including plants, lichens, algae and animals. For each section, Grierson writes about the plants and their uses as well as history, while Vining writes about their scientific classification and how they are related to other species.
Grierson is the weekly nature columnist for the Mount Desert Islander and has been a freelance nature writer for more than 50 years. She has authored five natural history books including “Wildlife Watching on Mount Desert Island.” Vining is a former seasonal interpretive ranger at Acadia National Park and has a botany degree from the University of Maine in Orono.
