If you have ever dreamed of running away from it all and living off the land, join author and homesteader Kirsten Lie-Nielsen at the Jesup Memorial Library on Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m. as talks about her book “So You Want To Be A Modern Homesteader?: All the Dirt on Living the Good Life.”
Lie-Nielsen moved to an abandoned farm in Liberty, Maine and is currently restoring the property to its former glory. Her farm is now home to goats, geese, chickens and an extensive vegetable garden. With her farm, Lie-Nielsen says her goal is to break the mold of traditional farming with a modern take on homesteading. Her book “So You Want to Be A Modern Homesteader?” aims to do just that. It is a “look before you leap” guide to the joys and pitfalls of homesteading. Lie-Nielsen gives in in-depth look at homesteading for people considering the lifestyle, and talks about the surprises of country living as well as explaining practical things like heating with a wood stove and raising animals for food. She also covers topics like finding the right property, practical “must-have” skills, earning an income and farming on a budget, creating community and much more.
Lie-Nielsen runs Hostile Valley Farm with her husband. After starting a small hobby homestead, her endeavors quickly grew to encompass geese, goats, chickens, bees, ducks, and extensive vegetable and herb gardens. Her first book is “A Modern Homesteader's Guide to Keeping Geese” is a practical guide for homesteaders, small farmers, permaculturists, and professional farmers looking to add geese to their land. She also writes about her experiences as a homesteader and the lessons of life on the farm for publications such as Grit, Mother Earth News, Backyard Poultry, and Hobbyfarms.com.
