Terese will lead us to explore the ruins of the historic structures of Bar Island. We'll see evidence of the fascinating histories of the Rodick family - Daniel Rodick, one of the earliest settlers of Bar Harbor arrived in 1769 and bought Bar Island from Mme DeGregoire in the late 1790s. From their island homestead, the descendants of Daniel flourished and led the development of Bar Harbor as the premier resort of the rich and famous. Pivoting from farming and fishing practices they built the largest hotel in the US and provided the infrastructure for a thriving summer colony on Mount Desert Island. Terese will talk and show us the remnants of the Hunt Slater summer estate, the birthplace of 'Rip Rap' the nationally admired pointer dog, and Moosewood, the home of retired NBC news correspondent Jack Perkins and his wife Mary Jo, and the Bar Harbor Canoe Club. We'll meet at the bottom of Bridge Street - wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing. Registration is limited to 15, so sign up early!
