SUMMARY:Sundays at the Jesup Winter Concert Series with Kelley Farm
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an afternoon of music with Kelley Farm at the Jesup Memorial Library on Sunday\, March 29 at 2 p.m. Kelley Farm plays a mix of music ranging from early 20th century pop\, to folk\, blues\, country\, rock and roll\, as well as some original pieces. They especially enjoy playing and singing music with vocal harmony possibilities. This concert is part of the Sundays at the Jesup Winter Concert Series at the library.\n\n \n\nThis concert will feature band members Rick Barter\, Amy Kurman\, Beth Herrick and Fred Benson (Jim Vekasi will not be at this performance). Barter has been making music for a long time. Although he plays a handful of different stringed instruments\, he has focused mainly on the ukulele for the past several years. He has been involved on MDI as a community cheerleader for the charms of the ukulele\, and for the sweetness of home-grown music. As a lifetime amateur luthier\, he plays instruments of his own design and construction. Kurman is a member of Evensong\, the hospice bedside singers\, and Divisi\, an eight-part a cappella group from Bangor. She has also been a member of the Acadia Choral Society\, Acadia Summer Chorale\, Maine Women's Balkan Choir and the Bar Harbor Music Festival operas. In addition to singing\, she also plays the ukulele. Herrick is relatively new to playing music\, starting 7 or 8 years ago with an MDI Adult Education ukulele class taught by Barter. By day\, she is a painter and by night dreams of being a jazz singer. Benson started playing violin at age nine and over the years added guitar\, banjo\, ukulele\, Autoharp and dulcimer. He enjoys playing and singing with five musical groups on and around MDI.\n\n \n\nKelley Farm formed when the Gray Farm Trio featuring Barter\, Kurman and Herrick invited Benson to play bass with them at an event at Kelley Farm Preserve to raise awareness of the preserve. Benson suggested that Vekasi\, a mandolin player\, would also be a good addition. When one of the organizers asked for the name of the group for introductions\, someone\, under the stress of the moment\, suggested "The Kelley Farm Five\," and the name (sort of) stuck.\n\n \n\nThe last concert in the Sundays at the Jesup Winter Concert Series will be on Sunday\, April 5 at 2 p.m. with flutist Hawk Henries. \n\n \n\nThis concert is free and open to the public and seating is first come\, first served. Doors to this event open at 1:30 p.m. For more information on this event\, contact the Jesup at 207-288-4245.
